House Games, Halloween decorating, nature walks, and big wins in Field Hockey!

This past week we had house games where the girls were divided up into various teams. Some played outdoor soccer, some played indoor soccer, and some took part in challenging problem solving activities. As always, Symons House competed very well and showed excellent team work and enthusiasm. Go Symons!

The girls also decorated the Symons/Harvey foyer in preparation for Halloween, which is coming up at the end of this week. There will be a haunted house, fireworks, and a costume parade so stayed tuned next week for pictures from those events. Here are a few pictures of our decorators!

Today, a group of gr. 9s and 10s went for a nature walk with Ms. Kaufmann. It wasn’t all nature though as it was quite cold out so we had to make a stop for a hot drink at Starbucks!

Some big news on the Athletics front from yesterday – The Senior Girls Field Hockey Team won the Island Championship (for the third year in a row!). Aline and Flora are our two Symons Superstars on the team. Congrats to the team and good luck as they advance to the BC Provincial Championship tournament in a couple of weeks!

SMUS Thanksgiving 2014 – Turkey, stuffing, pie…oh my…

This past week we celebrated Thanksgiving here at SMUS. All the boarders gathered in the gym for a beautiful sit down dinner put on by the wonderful Sodexo Staff and served by the ever fabulous SMUS Boarding Staff.

Prior to our Thanksgiving dinner each boarder had to trace their hand, cut it out and write what they believe they give to the boarding community that makes them thankful. At dinner each table was responsible for gluing all the wonderful quotes on huge cut out letters spelling out BOARDING.

There were smiles from ear to ear seen throughout dinner.

All the food was enjoyed by all the boarders and as shown in these pictures especially the Symons Girls!

After dinner there was a House Competition and to celebrate the opening night of the NHL each house had to nominate a boarder to participate in a hockey themed competition. Using a hockey stick Flora (our very own field hockey player) had to guide a pumpkin around the gym and shoot the pumpkin into the net! Flora made us all proud to be a part of Symons House!

After the Thanksgiving long weekend some of the Symons ladies got together to make some wonderful cupcakes and they even made a cake to share with Harvey house.

They added ingredients, they mixed, they decorated and of course they ate. Oh and Tireny was knitting and Gabbi showed everyone cute puppies on YouTube. It was an evening enjoyed by all!

The girls had another busy week. We welcomed our grade 11’s back from their various outdoor education trips, and it sounds like they all had an amazing time! The girls had a choice of watersports, rock climbing, scuba diving, sea kayaking, summit hiking and eco-village.

On Monday night, there was a Canadian University Presentation that many of the girls attended to get information about various Canadian universities. Thursday morning SMUS welcomed the Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock, which raises money for pediatric cancer research and programs for children with a history of cancer. The Tour de Rock team cycles from one end of the Vancouver Island to the other, over 14 days, covering 1,000 kilometres. Head shaving and leg waxing took place to raise money for the cause.
